Main Plant Process Building

Once used to reprocess spent nuclear fuel, the Main Plant Process Building at the West Valley Site is a four-story, heavily-shielded reinforced concrete structure. A number of  “cells” have been decontaminated in conjunction with past West Valley Demonstration Project activities.  However, a number of areas inside the building remain contaminated with original reprocessing equipment. Work through June 2011, in the Main Plant Process Building will include:

• Decontamination and dismantlement activities in ten cells and several ancillary areas inside the Main Plant Process Building .
• Processing, packaging, and off-site disposal of radioactive waste, and
• Preparing the building for future decommissioning
