Radioactive Waste Management, Processing, and Shipping

Since 1999, the WVDP has shipped off-site for disposal approximately
1 million cubic feet of low-level radioactive waste generated at the Project. Through 2011, WVES will safely process and dispose of the remaining low-level radioactive legacy waste and newly generated waste, including:

  • Disposal of legacy low-level radioactive waste,
  • Highly contaminated and large-scale equipment and debris using remote tooling,
  • Packaging and disposal of newly generated waste resulting from on-site decontamination and dismantlement work, and
  • Continued on-site safe storage of the solidified high-level waste stored in canisters.
